CATHERINE ATKINS FAGIN

Catherine Atkins Fagin, age 83 , died of complications of Parkinson’s disease.

She was the daughter of Pauline and Griff Atkins and grew up in North Carolina where she graduated valedictorian from Rocky Mount High School. She attended Salem College in Winston Salem and then graduated from Meredith College with a degree in math education. When she moved to Savannah she attended Armstrong College and obtained her Master’s in Education. In the ensuing years she taught in both public and private schools and lastly taught math at The Savannah Country Day School for twenty years.

Following retirement Catherine volunteered in the public school system as well as her beloved Savannah Country Day School. She also made a new career of volunteering at the 1996 Summer Olympics, was a Docent at the Green-Meldrim House, was active in the Savannah Historic Foundation, especially the Downtown Tour of Homes, and was an active member of the Downtown Garden Club. Catherine was a member and served on various committees at Wesley Monumental Methodist Church and volunteered in various projects at Congregation Mickve Israel where she once served as Administrator of the Sunday School.

In 1980 Catherine married Dr. Ronald Fagin and they put together a blended family with five children: Garland Chick (Mary Anna), Steve Chick (Mary Holmes), Catherine Chick Norton (Tom), Meredith Fagin Malcom (Mike), and Kimberly Fagin Slatkovsky (Ken) as well as twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, July 30, 2021, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Robert W. Haas.

    I’m so sorry to hear of Catherine’s passing. She was my 4th grade math teacher at SCDS. Thirty years later, she is still a standout when I think about the most impactful teachers I had in my 14 years there. I also have fond memories of seeing her at Congregation Mickve Israel throughout my childhood. She will be missed!

    Blessings for the Chick and Fagin families. Mrs. Chick/Fagin made an early impression on me in the 4th grade and for many years after at SCDS. Many years after SCDS, her recall of some small detail of school was wonderful. A few years ago at Popa’s I looked up to see her waiving at me. Smiles and a good conversation ensued. Very nice memories. Prayers.

    I was so sorry to learn the sad news about Catherine.We worked together at SCDS as Math teachers in the Lower School, and I learned what a dedicated and caring person Catherine could be. We also worked together in the Downtown Garden Club and the special Victorian Teas sponsored by our Garden Club. Catherine was always completely devoted ro any task she undertook, and always finished her goals with success. My prayers and thoughts are with the Fagin and Chick families. I willl always remember Catherine as a special person who used her gifts and talents to enrich others.

    I remember Mrs. Fagin fondly from my 4th grade class at SCDS. Even at that age, I was aware of what a special teacher she was, and I was always happy to see her on campus and exchange a few words as I progressed through SCDS.
