William 'Billy' E. Mullis III, 62, passed away after a brief illness at home January 7, 2018. Billy was a native of Savannah, born on February 22, 1955, the youngest child of parents, Bill and Betty Mullis. Billy grew up in Thunderbolt and Tybee Island, attending Nativity of Our Lord School and Benedictine Military School. A graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Billy was a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Georgia and Florida. He served in funeral service for over 40 years, including time in Osaka, Japan as an embalming instructor. After the World Trade Center attacks, Billy was dispatched as part of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT).



Billy was a practicing member of the Catholic Faith and proud to be a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Islands Council 10579. He had also earned his 12-gallon blood donation lapel pin for his selfless donations to the American Red Cross. In his spare time, Billy enjoyed visiting with friends, fishing, and boating. Many of his dearest friends will fondly remember his lengthy, late night phone calls.



Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Mullis, Jr. of Savannah, Ga.



Surviving are his son, William E. Mullis IV of Osaka, Japan; his sisters, Ruth Mullis Smoak and Dale Mullis Reardon of Savannah, Georgia; his brother, Bill Mullis (Nancy) of Jackson, New Jersey; his nephews, James Patrick Barbee, Jr. of Savannah and Michael A. Reardon, II (Sarah) of Jacksonville, Florida; his niece, Erin Smoak Stanley (Daniel) of Savannah; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.



The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.



The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Patrick S. O'Brien. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
