Obituary

Toni McCray, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in the loving presence of her family on September 21, 2026. Born on June 28, 1949, in Columbia, South Carolina, Toni was a cherished daughter of the late Venice Carlisle "V.C" Haselden and Lottie Sue Haselden. She was preceded in death by her youngest sister, Carleen Haselden, whom she dearly missed.

Toni's life was marked by love, dedication, and a deep commitment to those around her. In 1968, her life took a beautiful turn when friends introduced her to David McCray on a blind date. Their love blossomed, and they were married in 1972, spending decades together filled with happiness and devotion. Toni and David's union was blessed with two children, Kathy Allen (Jeff) and Drew McCray (Jessica).

A graduate of Jenkins High School in 1967, Toni pursued higher education at Armstrong State College, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Her career began in the welfare department, but it was in teaching that she found her true calling. For over twenty-five years, she dedicated herself to nurturing young minds as a kindergarten teacher at May Howard Elementary School. Her passion for teaching continued even after her retirement, as she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. Toni was beloved by her colleagues and students alike, known for her warm smile, sense of humor, and the positive influence she had on countless lives.

Toni's life was enriched by her hobbies and interests, which included tap dancing, aerobics, and exploring the mountains of North Georgia and North Carolina. She was an active member of Grace Church of the Islands, where she found spiritual fulfillment and a treasured community of friends.

Her legacy lives on through her cherished family: her loving husband David, her children Kathy and Drew, her granddaughters Emily Keener (Vaughn) and Madison Kennedy, grandsons James, Will, and Alex Bender, her precious great-granddaughter Kya Keener, her sister Brenda Haselden McLanahan, her brother V.C. Haselden Jr. (Patty), and many nieces and nephews. Toni's family was her pride and joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will forever be remembered.

A service to honor and celebrate Toni's life will be held on September 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Grace Church of the Islands, located at 6901 Concord Rd, Savannah, GA 31410. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A graveside ceremony will follow directly after the service at Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Toni's memory.

Toni McCray will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, and dedication, and she will be remembered with warmth and affection by all who knew her.
