Richard Eugene 'Dick' Mahany passed away on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017, after a long battle with Agent Orange brain poisoning.
He was a native of Savannah, Georgia. He was born July 21st, 1946, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Walter Joseph Mahany and Ann Mary Hiers Mahany. He was predeceased by his older brother, Walter Joseph Mahany, Jr.
Dick was educated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and Saint James Catholic School in Savannah, Christopher Columbus Marist High School in Miami, Florida, and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, where he was Captain of the Corps of Cadets. He received a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1968.
He entered the Air Force on July 6th, 1968, serving as a navigator on KC135 tankers, AC130A Spectre Gunships, and F-4 jet fighters. He is the recipient of the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters and The Distinguished Flying Cross.
After Vietnam, Dick owned and operated several businesses in the southeast. His major passion was fishing. He belonged to the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove, Florida, The Rod & Reel Club of Miami, Florida, and helped found Florida Fun Fishers of which he served as commodore.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Jane McIntosh Mahany; by his children: Margaret Ann Mahany Mims, Walter Joseph Mahany III, Mary Elizabeth Mahany Chiappa, Molly Catherine Mahany Roohi, and Richard Eugene Mahany II; by his stepchildren: Angela Jane Brooks Najam and Randolph Lahmeyer Brooks Jr., and 10?? grand and step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 o'clock Monday morning at St. James Catholic Church conducted by Father Mark J. Ross. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
