Savannah

Maureen (Mollie) Nee Sieger, recently of Savannah, GA, died on December 1, 2025. Visitation will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 7020 Concord Rd., Savannah, GA 31410 at 10:00AM on December 15, 2025 , with a funeral mass at 11:00 AM, and interment at Greenwich Cemetery to follow.

Born on October 27, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mollie was the third child and oldest daughter of Thomas and Mary Nee. Mollie grew up in a happy, close family, but had to take responsibility early because her mother died when Mollie was only 16. Mollie stepped in and cared for her father, brothers, and younger sister, Peggy, which left little time for anything but family. Fortunately, Mollie met her brothers’ friend, and her verbal nemesis, James (Jim) Sieger, whom she later fell for and married in 1962. Mollie and Jim raised their two daughters all over the United States, instilling in them a love of art, history, literature, and the need to share the wonder of God’s love. Mollie loved nothing more than teaching others and making her space beautiful. Most especially, Mollie loved any occasion where people came together over food.

Over all of her years of volunteer work and service to the Church, there can really be no doubt that Mollie was proudest of her daughters. As an educator, Mollie found satisfaction in knowing that her family had a solid background and opportunity to serve their communities. Family and friends remember Mollie's generosity with her time, always served with a side of chocolate chip cookies. No gathering would be complete without Mollie’s cleaning, decorating, and her compulsion to ensure everyone had far too much to eat. Mollie’s desire for excellence in all things, and her fierce loyalty to those she loved, will last.

Mollie always wanted herself and the world around her to be better. A strong believer in the power of education, Mollie earned a Bachelor’s in Education from Duquesne University, and worked toward her Master’s Degree. A fourth grade teacher in the Pennsylvania School System, Mollie left formal teaching to raise a family, though she never left the classroom behind. Always present for Art in Schools, CCD, or adult education through the Catholic faith, Mollie never stopped giving of herself.

Mollie and Jim traveled the world, and she was always the person asking the most esoteric questions wherever they went. Want to know how to thatch a roof in Sturbridge Village? Mollie did. Want to know exactly how the soldiers made their approach on any battlefield? Mollie wanted to walk it. This hands on love of history translated into volunteer work everywhere Mollie and Jim lived, from churning butter at Hiwan Homestead in Evergreen, Colorado, to open hearthcooking at the Tullie Smith House in Atlanta. Keep in mind that anything Mollie did, her girls were expected to do, too. To this day, carding wool and using a spinning wheel are skills they carry like riding a bicycle.

When Jim retired, Mollie worked as a receptionist at a retirement community in Atlanta, greeting all comers with a smile and a kind word. Even there, she would delve into her love of art and history to run a book club or give presentations. She even started a small faith community for the Catholic residents at Mount Vernon Towers.

Throughout her life, Mollie travelled to 18 countries and visited most of the contiguous United States and Hawaii. Mollie is preceded in death by her husband James (Jim), and is survived by daughters Mary Miller of Tallahassee, Florida, and Christine Barker (Michael), of Savannah, as well as two grandchildren, Nicholas and Natalie Barker, and numerous nieces, and nephews.
