ALCOLU, SOUTH CAROLINA - Margaret Burton Hawkes, 90, of Alcolu, South Carolina, and formerly of Augusta, Georgia, widow of The Reverend Robert James Hawkes, died Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Augusta, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late William Frierson Burton and the late Ruby Futrell Burton and the late Lillie Burton. Mrs. Hawkes was of the United Methodist faith. She graduated from Tubman Girl's School in Augusta and was a former beautician. Mrs. Hawkes was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was most proud of her role as the wife of a United Methodist Pastor.
Surviving are two daughters, Billie Nalley and her husband, Gene, of Gable, South Carolina, and Carol Hawkes of Alcolu, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Celeste Whiteley, Robbie Nalley, Angie Bruner and Shanna Smithson; thirteen great-grandchildren, Casey, Tara, Taylor, Kelsey, McKayla, Dara, Sara Knight, Gracyn, Abbie, Jeb, Stephen, Cameron and Leaih; one sister, Shirley Berry and her husband, Bill, of Augusta, Georgia; one brother, Thomas Levi Burton and his wife, Betty, of North Augusta, South Carolina, and her sister-in-law, Erma Rumbley Hawkes of Martinez, Georgia.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the graveside, Westview Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia, conducted by The Reverend William E. Berry.
