John Walter Rechtzigel, age 81, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026. He was born on January 1, 1945, in New York City, New York.

John was the beloved son of John and Dorothy Rechtzigel. He was adopted at the age of four and attended St. Raymond’s Boys School in the Bronx. He graduated from Manhattan College and then earned a Master’s of Social Work degree from Florida State University.

After completing his education, John proudly served two years in the United States Army. Following his service, he dedicated his life to helping others through his work as a social worker. Over the course of his career in Savannah, he served the community through his work at the Family Counseling Center, Tidelands, Georgia Regional, and the Fraser Center. His compassion and commitment to supporting families and individuals made a lasting impact on many lives.

On April 27, 1974, John married the love of his life, Susan Chatham. Together they built their family and shared many happy years of marriage. John was a devoted husband, proud father, and doting grandfather who always made sure his family had their car oil, cholesterol, and lives in check.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, and his three daughters, Lisa (Damien) Guarnieri, Anna (Josh) Hayes, and Kristin (Chad) Chandler; and his nine beloved grandchildren Caleb, Luke, Colby, Levi, Noah, Hadley, Grayson, Noelle, and Kara. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Stoops and many nieces and nephews.

John was a member of White Bluff Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his quirky humor, steady guidance, and dedication to serving others. His legacy lives on in the many people whose lives he touched, especially his family whom he loved dearly
