John Elbert Matthews, 57, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Penny Price-Matthews, died Wednesday afternoon, November 6, 2013, at Memorial University Medical Center, surrounded in love and prayer by many friends and family members.
Born in Freeport on Long Island, New York, he was a son of the late Elbert Wilson Matthews and the late Lucy Rini Matthews. John was an active member of Savannah Christian Church where he served as a Deacon as well as in Men's Leadership. He earned his accounting degree from Armstrong State University and was the Managing Partner for Deemer, Dana & Froehle. John was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Savannah Corporate Academy, CFO for Nurses for the Nation, and served two terms on the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education, representing the 6th District. He also helped served as a Love Mentor to at-risk students, as well as to many adult friends.?? His heart knew no boundaries and he never seemed to know a stranger.?? He would go out of his way to help those in need, especially those others might ignore.?? His kind, gentle, and loving spirit was felt by all who were blessed enough to know him.?? He loved learning, especially reading and a lively debate/conversation.?? He and his wife loved nature, heading to the beach or the mountains to hike or walk whenever possible.???? John was a Godly man, and a leader by example, the husband of his wife's dreams and so much more, a beloved, adored and respected father and grandfather, who was widely loved and adored by his family. He will be missed by one and all, especially his family!
Surviving is his wife of 30 years, Penny Price-Matthews of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Olivia Matthews Lowther and her husband, Ed, of Bluffton, South Carolina, and Erinn Elizabeth Matthews of Savannah, Georgia; one son, Adam Price Matthews of Savannah, Georgia; three grandchildren, Hunter Singletary, Trace Lowther and Mason Singletary; one sister, Susan Matthews Taylor and her husband, Rodney, of Richmond Hill, Georgia; one brother, Todd Matthews and his wife, Rosemary, of Augusta, Georgia, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday evening at Savannah Christian Church ' Henderson Campus.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at Savannah Christian Church ' Henderson Campus, conducted by Senior Pastor Cam Huxford. Interment will be private.
