SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Hildegarde Bergen Broderick, 81, of Savannah, Georgia, died peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, June 16, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home.
Born on March 5, 1929, in Savannah, Georgia, Hilde was the daughter of the late Cletus William Bergen and the late Hildegarde Blake Bergen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. J. Reid Broderick, Jr., and her brothers, William Petty Bergen and Joseph Bodell Bergen.
Hilde graduated from The Pape School in Savannah, attended Marymount College, and graduated from the University of Georgia. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Hilde worked as office manager in her husband's medical practice until their retirement in 1995. She was also accomplished in the art of needlepoint, and completed pieces used in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Finally, Hilde and Reid's rose garden on 46th Street was their mutual passion.
Surviving are her daughter, Anne Marie Broderick of Savannah; sons, Kevin Broderick and his wife, Virginia of Savannah, and Mark Broderick of Hilton Head Island, SC; Kathleen Bergen Durham and her husband Jim of St. Simons Island, GA, and Clete Bergen and his wife Deanne of Savannah, GA, who were like children to her; grandchildren, Kelly Broderick, Marie Broderick, Katie Broderick, Ashlee Ralston, Rebecca Durham, Sarah Durham, Christopher Bergen, and Matthew Bergen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the vigil service being held at 7 o'clock at the church.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will be in Catholic Cemetery.
