Hilda Bazemore Kelly Smith, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Candler Hospital. Hilda was born on March 19, 1926 to the late Wilbur and Bonnie Gross Bazemore.
Hilda was the loving and adored wife of Donald J. Kelly until his death in 1991. He and 'Sug', as he affectionately called her, traveled the world during his service to our country. They lived in Japan, Italy, Hawaii, California and Virginia before returning to Savannah to be with family. In Savannah, Hilda was employed at Hunter Army Airfield for many years until her retirement.
Hilda later married Sam I. Smith and they were devoted to each other for many years until his death in 2010.
Hilda was also predeceased by her brother, Omer 'Ned' Bazemore.
She will be greatly missed by her sister, Marian Bazemore Bouchillon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Masroor for his exemplary care and compassion, Dr. Funderburk whose surgical skills added many years to her life, and Dr. DeHaven who cared for her since her return to Savannah.
The family would also like to express our gratitude to Tracey Sandness, whose long-term loyalty as a caregiver, companion, and friend, was invaluable. Also to Rosa Giles, Victoria Smalls, and Cherish Williams who, with their tender hands and caring hearts, answered the many calls for extra help.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 1 o'clock Tuesday at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday, December 1, 2015, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Dr. James N. Staubes. Interment will be in Lower Black Creek Church Cemetery.
