Obituary

Helen Claire Marcus Rosengart, age 98, went to her eternal home on October 17, 2026 after a long and well-lived life.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Rosengart, to whom she was married for 51 years.

She is survived by her loving children, Robert Rosengart (Theresa) of Macon and Russell Rosengart (Jolene) of Statesboro; her beloved grandchildren, Marc, Jordan, and Griffin, and extended family.

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Helen attended Columbia University as a theater major. Helen and Harvey eventually relocated to Statesboro, Georgia, where she served as president and co-owner of WPTB radio station. She was also vice president and office manager for the dress factories Carri Classics and Marydell Styles for many years.Helen immersed herself in work, child-rearing, and community involvement. Her can-do spirit and zest for life benefited others in the community in countless ways. She was a regular volunteer for Day for Southern fundraising events for many years. In 2008, she was named a Deen Day Smith Award honoree.Helen was also president and co-founder of the Bulloch Ogeechee Greater Arts Council. In her later years, she was honored when the Rosengart Gallery at the Averitt Center for the Arts was named in her honor, recognizing her longstanding association with the performing arts, including her work directing plays. Among the productions she directed were Anything Goes, Oklahoma!, Miracle on 34th Street, Patsy Cline, and Annie, all of which enjoyed sold-out performances. Helen fondly recalled that Annie featured a live dog, something unheard of in Statesboro at the time! She was also honored as the second “Legend” in the Bulloch County Historical Society video series. Helen was an avid supporter of the United Way and the American Cancer Society and was a member of the Statesboro Chamber of Commerce. She taught adult literacy at the Statesboro Regional Library and, at the “young” age of 77, was named Instructor of the Year.

Helen was a longtime member of Congregation Agudath Achim in Savannah, Georgia. In 1957, she and Harvey were also instrumental in co-founding the Statesboro Hebrew Congregation. She even found time to help early Pennsylvania Catholic families purchase land for their first church in the 1950s.

As a founding member and past president of the Statesboro–Georgia Southern Symphony Guild, Helen helped make Statesboro the smallest city in America to have its own symphony at the time. She wrote a grant that helped establish music programs in local schools, allowing students to experience classical music and attend symphony performances at Hanner Fieldhouse. In her later years, Helen was an active participant in the Statesboro chapter of the Red Hat Society, where she also served as co-Queen, an experience she greatly enjoyed. Helen loved all animals, both domestic and wild. In her earlier years, she also took great pleasure in gardening and cooking. She also took delight in hearing the talented piano artistry of musician and friend Dr. Michael Braz.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care Helen received over the last couple of years at The Lodge at Bethany from Regina Bell, Kenya Scott, and the entire staff. The family also extends its gratitude to her caregivers over the years, particularly her physician and friend, Brian Moogerfeld, and, in her final days, the caring staff at Ogeechee Area Hospice.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 1:00 pm o’clock at Bonaventure Cemetery (Jewish section S) in Savannah, Georgia, under the direction of Gamble Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be sent to The Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro, Georgia.
