Gregory Martin O’Hara, 64, lost his hard fought and courageous 2.5 year battle with ALS at his home in Savannah Georgia surrounded by family and friends on July 10, 2025. He is predeceased by his parents William Martin O’Hara and Anna Krescenthia O’Hara. He is survived by his wife Janet of 40 years, his children, and his brother Jeff (Janet) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Greg had a big personality and loved his family very deeply. He was very protective of us and always made us feel safe. He was proud of his military service and was a diehard South Carolina Gamecock fan, even if they often lost a game. He was a great athlete, having played college level baseball and was extremely competitive, often asking his ping pong and pickleball opponents if they wanted him to “play with his left hand” to make it more of an evenly matched game.
Greg was a retired US Army officer. After retirement he worked for the City of Pooler in their recreation department coaching and running sports events. He called it his “fun job”.
The family is thankful for all of his caregivers along the way including the VA Home Based Primary Care Team, the VA ALS Clinic in Charleston, SC, Simone Brown, and Hospice Savannah who all treated Greg and our family with dignity and grace.
In leu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS United of Georgia to help find a cure or treatment for this devastating disease. ALSgeorgia.org
Funeral services will be on July 15th at the Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors at 11:00.
