Elizabeth A. Mcgirr

October 9, 1926 — May 12, 2024

Betty McGirr was born on October 9, 1926 in Newburyport, MA. She was the elder daughter of William and Medora Condon. She grew up and was educated in Haverhill, MA, and attended Simmons College in Boston, where she got her Bachelor’s degree in Merchandising.

She married Robert (Bob) P. McGirr on July 16, 1948. Their children came into their lives starting with Kathleen (born 1950), followed by Nancy (1952), and Mary Elizabeth (1953). Robert, her elder son arrived in 1956 followed by William in 1964. At the time of her death, she had eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She loved being a grandmother.

Betty and Bob moved often due to Bob’s work, starting out in Boston, then in Everett, MA, and Pembroke, NH, followed years in Lewiston, Auburn, Waterville, Portland, and Cape Elizabeth, Maine. In 1969, the family moved to Barrington, RI and later to Chatham, NJ, before landing back in Laconia, NH, where they spent their retirement years.

Bob McGirr passed on in October 2009 just as they had moved to Bentley Commons, an assisted living facility in Bedford, NH, where Betty remained until 2018. By then, most of her children had relocated to the Carolinas and Georgia, where she joined them in 2018 as a resident of Buckingham South in Savannah, GA. Following a fall that limited her mobility, she moved to Azalealand Nursing Care, where she remained until her death on May 12, 2024.

Betty spent most of her early married life as a homemaker. As the children grew up and left the home, Betty worked, first as a Personal Assistant to the inventor of Droll Yankee bird feeders, and then as a residential real estate broker. Betty and Bob enjoyed their retirement years: they travelled, both internationally and within the US They were avid golfers and long-term members of Laconia Country Club. They enjoyed playing social bridge, and Betty also played duplicate bridge. She enjoyed drawing and painting and almost all of the family members have her works displayed in their homes.

Betty was a caring mother and wife and though she is now gone, she will be long remembered. Her remains will be interred at Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, MA, where she will be sharing the burial space with her late husband, Bob, and surrounded by other members of the extended McGirr/Condon family.

A family memorial event is being organized for later in the summer/fall.
