Edna Edith Storie Welsh, 87, of Savannah, Georgia and widow of Peter Joseph Welsh, Jr., died Tuesday evening, March 19, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Adelia Storie. While going to school, she worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she met her future husband, Peter J. Welsh, Jr. who was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. They married there and shortly afterwards moved to Savannah, Georgia. During her lifetime she was involved in many social and fraternal activities. She served as treasurer for the Loyal Star ' an auxiliary for railroad carmen and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 135. When she was a teenager she traveled in a Vaudeville Act with her grandfather. She volunteered at the Inner City Night Shelter serving dinner. In later years, she obtained the title of Professed secular Carmelite, something she had worked very hard for and was proud of. She was a founding member of St. James Catholic Church and a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. She enjoyed her flowers, bingo, working in her yard, babysitting her grandchildren, and watching her beloved Atlanta Braves. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. E. Welsh, Sr.
Surviving are her children, Mary K. Adams of Savannah, Georgia, Margaret A. Roberts of Ellabell, Georgia, Pater J. Welsh III of Savannah, Georgia, Patrick D. Welsh, Sr. of Pooler, Georgia, Doloris A. Waters of Reidsville, Georgia, and Terrance B. Welsh of Collins, Georgia; twenty grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Ritia Carbowl and Margaret Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the Rosary service being held at 6 o'clock in the funeral home chapel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church conducted by Monsignor Francis J. Nelson. Interment will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Mark Waters, Eddie Waters, Peter Waters, Joe Bob Waters, Dennis Adams, and Patrick D. Welsh, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are William Adams and Anthony Adams.
