CPO Melvin Douglas Wilson, U. S. Coast Guard (Ret.), 78, of Port Wentworth, Georgia and husband of Joanne Shuman Wilson, died Friday afternoon, March 18, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a son of the late Robert Wilson and the late Geffry Alta Elkins Stamey. Doug attended Bonnybridge Baptist Church. He retired as an Aviation Electrician's Mate Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service in the United States Coast Guard. After retirement Doug worked for 13 years for Gulfstream and for 13 years for Lockheed Martin International. He and Joanne were avid square dancers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Marshall Douglas Wilson and his wife, Kris; a grandson, Charles Nathan Callaway, and a brother, William 'Bill' Harley Wilson.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Joanne Shuman Wilson of Port Wentworth, Georgia; one son, Joseph D. Wilson and his wife, Taylor, of Cartersville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Amanda Hammock and her husband, Scott, Jessica Wilson and her fianc??, Cohen Grizzard, Collin Wilson and Maddox Wilson, and four great-grandchildren, Mattilynn Lee Callaway, Marshall Lehman Callaway, Ethan Hammock and Grace Hammock.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service ' 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Paul Battles. Interment, with full military honors, will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
Parnick Jennings Funeral Home of Cartersville and Gamble Funeral Service of Savannah are in charge of arrangements.
