SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Charlie Luther Martin, 87, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Myrna Harrell Martin, died Friday evening, May 11, 2012, at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center under the care of Hospice Savannah. May 11 was his birthday and the date of his anniversary with his wife of 60 years, Myrna, who passed away earlier this year.
Born in Wimauma, Florida, he was a son of the late Ernest Dudley Martin and the late Margaret Holley Martin. Mr. Martin was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and at one time served the Savannah church as Bishop. He served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1951, he married Myrna Harrell of Tarboro, North Carolina. Charlie loved flying and became a pilot spotting fish over the Atlantic. He joined Union Camp Corp as a pilot in their aviation department in Franklin, Virginia and relocated to Savannah in 1976. Charlie retired from Union Camp and began working for Flight Safety in Savannah. During his years of flying, Charlie logged over 23,000 hours of flying time. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Lance Corporal Jared L. Almand.
Survivors include two daughters, Renee Sink of Lexington, NC and Tamara Martin Heaton of Savannah; two sons, C. Lynsey Martin of Savannah and Chet Martin of Aptos, CA; six grandchildren, Sara Martin of Savannah, Larkin Martin of Savannah, Justin Almand of Savannah, Ryan Sink of Lexington, NC, Debra-Gail Martin of San Jose, CA, and Dr. Christopher Martin of San Francisco, CA; one great-grandchild, Jersey Sink; two sisters, Ernestine Cary of Portsmouth, VA and Iva Pickett of Carrollton, MO, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Monday evening at Gamble Funeral Service - 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
