Barbara (Bobbie) Smith Levy, 82, passed away on February 24, 2017, after a long and courageous battle against cancer. A proud native of Savannah, she was born February 6, 1935 to Kayton and Josephine Smith, also proud natives of this historic town. She was the granddaughter of Jacob G. and Ruth Kayton Smith and of Leo and Beulah Wachtel, also of Savannah.



Known by many as Bobbie, she was editor of the school paper and President of the class of 1952 of the Pape School in Savannah where she made many life-long dear friends while earning a Classical degree with honors. Bobbie later attended Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, VA.



She is survived by her husband, Merrill A. Levy of Savannah; three sons, Dr. Alan (Dena), Rob (Ann), and Bert (Linda) Levy and their families, all of Atlanta; a brother, Kayton Smith, Jr., and his wife, Lucile, of Savannah; six grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.



In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Bobbie was passionate about her beliefs and causes. She never hesitated to volunteer her time and effort. Bobbie was a beloved librarian for the Chatham County Library System where she was known for her story telling abilities with the Library\'s Children\'s Story Hour.



An avid supporter of the arts and humanities including the Savannah Little Children\'s Theater, Bobbie was also a long-time member of Congregation Mickve Israel where she served as a docent and where she was most recently honored by the Sisterhood as a Woman of Valor. She was also the former president of the Savannah Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and Voters Service Chairman for the League of Women Voters.



Known for her effervescent personality and her clever limericks, she was a wonderful cook and always on the go. Her lovely southern accent delighted all with whom she had contact. No one did \"Southern \" better.



A memorial service will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2017, at Congregation Mickve Israel conducted by Rabbi Robert W. Haas.
