Albert Leo Tomaszewski

August 23, 1931 — May 30, 2023

Albert Leo Tomaszewski, also called Al, Mr. Thomas Whiskey and — his favorite title — Papa, died just after dawn at Hospice Savannah on May 30.

Al loved serving in the US Army Intelligence Corps, where he conducted aerial photo interpretation during the Korean War; night flying in Alabama in his Piper Super Cub; and fishing despite close encounters with snakes.

Then in 1966 he met a woman he loved more than all that, and when they married, he also became an instant father to her four children, ages 6, 9, 17 and 18. Eventually, he and Jean would co-own an appliance store in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.

In 1978, his new grandson was the first baby he ever held, and his love grew to match little Alan’s intense needs: born paralyzed from the chest down, also diagnosed with cerebral palsy and more. When Children’s Hospital doctors warned Alan would not survive the winter coming in 1981, they closed up their business and moved to Savannah to save him.

For 45 years, Al took care of Alan’s needs, working with Jean to see him through 50+ surgeries, inspiring Dr. Andrew Sheils to say of this Mama and Papa: “They are the only reason this kid is still alive." They turned Alan's nursing care into fun and games, creating joy for him. Al further supported them by working for The Landings as a third-shift security chief, where he loved seeing the wildlife and sunrises.

Born on August 23, 1931, in Ambridge, Al was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Sr. and Emma Skordinsky, his wife Jean and their son Don (Alan’s father). He is survived by their other children Ron Hamilton (Vista, CA), Linda Allen (Port Wentworth, GA), Sherri Byrand (Providence, RI) and his daughter-in-law UnHui (Ron) Hamilton, whom he and Jean always considered a third daughter; and his grandchildren Michael Hamilton, Alan Hamilton, Jason Brown, Jason’s spouse Kiana, Danny Allen and Kade Byrand, and his great grandson Gabriel Brown.

Interment will be private.

Remembrances may be made for the recreation department at Eagle Heath and Rehabilitation, 405 South College Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
