  5. Chris Watkins says:

    Lori, Emma and Jack,

I grieve with you. Matt was a great friend to me but I know he was an even closer father and husband for you. As you know, Matt offered to let me borrow his faith when I was sick. It was an act that changed my life, in how I understood God’s grace and the faith that He has called us to live out. I offered Matt the same when he was sick, so he could borrow my faith. I really wish God let him stay longer. I celebrate that God NEVER abandoned him, not even now. I know this may not seem to be enough because we long for Matt to be here in earth, today. We miss him but his legacy lives on in the memories and in us…we live differently because of Matt’s hand in guiding us to Christ fullness of life. Even better than that is our hope to joke with Matt again as we eventually join him in Heaven. The greatest of all is Love and I truly believe that the love we shared with Matt is eternal. We will see him again. #HeGotToDoThis

  13. Terry & Wendy Blankenship says:

We called Gateway our church home for several years when we first married. Matt’s quick wit & humor always kept us engaged in the sermon. One thing I love about Matt is that when was speaking with you, he listened so intently & intentionally, as if you were the only person in the room. He made you feel like you mattered & were important. Matt, you have made an impact on so many & led so many to the love of Christ through your love. To Lori & your children, my heart breaks for you but there’s peace in knowing that you know that you know where Matt is right now, pain-free, worshiping God with his whole heart & whole body.

  14. Kentucky Friends says:

    To the Hearn family,
As everyone mourns loosing Matt to a very mean cancer, I can only say how how happy I am to have met Matt and your family through my Son, Davis and my daughter in law, Candy. There was a such a strong feeling of Christ in Matt, which impressed me more than I can explain.
I wish your family comfort and strength as you walk through life holding his Matts memory in your hearts.
    Prayers and much love.

    To the Hearn family…..
My heart is overwhelmed with sadness after opening this email and reading of Matt’s passing… I need to let you know he is forever in my spiritual thoughts as one who renewed the Holy Spirit inside of ME!! I only lived in Pooler a short time with my son Mason. We attended Gateway church and my love for Christ renewed after Matt’s sermons would touch me on such a personal level. At the time I was grieving my own husbands passing just 5 years prior to my move to Pooler in 2013 he was only 48. I felt such a deep connection I became a member of my church here in Ohio and I have Matt to thank for starting this amazing journey for me!! Rest In Peace and thank you so much for bringing life back into me Matt!! And Lori…. I pray for peace and comfort for you and your family!! Take care and God Bless to all of you!

Matt has been and will always be a shining light to every soul he has touched. Susie and I are so blessed to know him. I still remember the first time I came to Gateway and for the first time I ever knew, a pastor was willing to sit down and have a breakfast with us to get to know us and have a real personal relationship. We will never forget the love he and your family brought to our lives. The world is a better place to have had Matt. Heaven is now a more joyous place to have him in it. Matt’s work will resound through all of eternity. Thank you again for blessing our lives.

I’m sincerely saddened to learn about Pastor Matt’s passing. I played violin on several special occasions at the church and met Matt briefly, but he left a lasting impression on me. His warmth, sincerity, and personality made me feel as if we had been long time friends, and I’m sure everyone else who met Matt for the first time felt the same.
The Gateway church family is an incredible group and God bless all of you as you minister to Matt’s family. I pray mercy on his immediate family and his friends as they deal with this incredible void in the family of God.

  21. Kim Costley says:

Lori, Emma, Jack and the entire gateway family,

Our hearts are heavy with much sadness in hearing about Matt’s passing. We will never forget the smile he always has on his face even if we didn’t and the joy on his face as each of us entered the doors of church. He was much more than just our pastor, he was such an amazing friend to us as well. Parts of me are envious that he’s up there with my daddy looking down on all of us, however parts of me wants to be selfish and say come back so we can come say a proper goodbye.

    We love y’all,
Kim, Brendan, Casey, Makhenzie and Isaac

  35. Tschida Family says:

My wife and I started attending Gateway Church in Pooler after we were married in 2015. This small church had a lot of great people including Senior Pastor Matt. My wife grew up going to church but it was not part of my upbringing. As part of our commitment to each other, I wanted to try and give more of an effort to learning from the church community. I was nervous about the process as it was a new adventure for me – and I wasn’t sure what to expect. My first few Sundays at Gateway really helped me to feel comfortable. Matt had a way of story-telling / speaking / engaging with all of the members that kept me hooked. We have enjoyed being a part of this church for over six years and Matt was the biggest part of that for me. Every sermon seemed to speak directly to my situation and we felt so comfortable listening to Matt. Along with my wife, Matt inspired me to be baptized here at Gateway and Matt performed the baptism for our son. Matt will be greatly missed by our family, but his kindness, leadership and dedication to others will last forever. The Hearn family will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

  36. Rev. Billy Hester says:

Our prayers are with Lori, Emma, Jack, and the members of Gateway.

  40. Terri Monroe says:

Lori, Emma and Jack, I can’t imagine all the different things you are feeling right now, and the many things that have to be done regardless. I can tell by the way Matt spoke of each of you that he loved you beyond compare. He loved people, too, but not as deeply as you. He was warm, funny and direct when he needed to be. I remember his sermon on “Crucial Conversations” and some of the family stories he told. You all are an amazing part of his legacy that has already touched so many people and I’m guessing many more to come. A friend of mine told me something I never thought of before. When someone passes on, they are not gone; they have gone ahead. I know all of us will be reunited with our loved ones once again, and we will never have to bear the loss. My heart goes out to each of you. You are all so dearly loved, especially from the family you and Matt created through the beginnings of Gateway Church. I pray the peace of Jesus over all of you. ❤️

Our deep and heartfelt condolences to Matt’s family. Lori, Emma, Jack our prayers are with you. Matt is one of the most incredible, precious and special human beings that walked this earth. There are no words that can describe how much he means to us, how much he invested in us and how profoundly he impacted our lives. He tough us what it means to be a true disciple and the importance of serving, loving and investing in others. He is the most humbled, authentic and graceful men that we know. His graceful voice, his healing words and godly, priceless wisdom would pierce the soul. It was impossible to hear him speak and afterwards leave with an empty and hungry soul. What a precious gift he was to us. He made us laugh and was an incredible teacher. We feel the deepest respect and admiration for him. I always left Gateway with a full and inspired heart. Ready to do good. 1 Timmothy 6:18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share…
Olivia loved going to Gateway, because of the atmosphere he created that swept like a wave through every ministry. I will never forget, when she was 3 or 4 years old, she would ask when we got in the car: „Are we going to Hallelujah (that’s how she called Gateway), are we going to Hallelujah?“ Jumping up and down full of excitement. When I would answer with no, she would make a super sad face and say:“ Ohhh, why can’t we go? When can we go again, tomowwow?“The next day she would ask me again and the following day…. Matt baptized her/ us as a family. I will never forget that day. He left us countless precious memories that we will always cherish and carry in our hearts. We are forever thankful for all the hard work, time, grace, love… Matt and his family invested in others because of their love for Christ.
Our heart aches and is with the Hearn Family. We are so thankful for you. We will continue to keep you in our earnest prayers. He will be deeply missed.
It gives us comfort to know that he has fought the good fight, he has finished the race and that he has kept the faith. 2 Timmothy 4:7.
We will deeply miss you, Matt! Your love, your gentle voice, your graceful smile and your legacy are forever imprinted in our hearts.

Matt was such a huge part of our lives and helped us to connect with GOD as never before. I remember first seeing the billboard in Pooler Ga, stating, same bible different church. This intrigued me to find out more and I am so glad we did. We were here for the early years and am so grateful we were able to see so much growth and healing in this church and community. Thank you Lori, Jack, and Emma for allowing him to be a part of all of our lives. 53. Daniel and Ashley Mercer says:

We met Matt through our amazing friends PJ and Katie Adams. They started attending Gateway when it was meeting at the Pooler YMCA many years ago. We enjoyed getting to know Matt a bit at that time. My husband was the youth pastor at Garden City UMC from 2008-2012 and Gateway was all about investing in Youth and partnered and even hosted on occasion The Vine Ministry. We have been following Matt’s health and faith journey and we have been praying for his family and are continuing to pray for y’all. Matt had the best smile and a heart of gold, filled with Jesus and His love! My husband graduated from Asbury Seminary in May 2017 and we now live in Lexington, KY so we have retraced some of Matt’s earlier steps into ministry. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Prayers for the Hearn Family. -Daniel and Ashley Mercer

  55. Brittany Rowland says:

Lori, Emma & Jack, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Matt was such a wonderful person. God knew that I needed a church home and put Matt in the perfect volunteer position at a mud run years ago so that introduction would be made. He made everyone around him feel loved and important and I can’t imagine what a loss you must be feeling. I pray for peace that only God can give.

  56. Sara W Bankhead says:

My prayers for comfort and support to Lori, Emma, Jack and other family members in the death of Matt. Prayers also to the members of Gateway UMC. All of us will experience this loss in many different ways but we put our trust and faith in a God that already has prepared a place for Matt and we are grateful for that. Blessings to each of you.
