Dorothy Mae Benton was born in Garnet, South Carolina on September 16, 1937 to the late William and Lilar J. Benton. She was educated in the Chatham County Public School System and accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at St. Luke Baptist Church. Later in life she became a member of Townsley Chapel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Reverend Charles W. Dumas, Jr.
Dorothy leaves to join two of her children, Mr. Roger Benton and Mr. John Benton; six siblings, William Benton, Elease Roberts, Marvin Benton, Emma Benton-Spencer, Eva Pearl Benton and Marion Benton who all preceded her in death.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: five sons, Melvin Benton, Michael Benton, Anthony Edwards all of Savannah, Georgia, Leroy White of Charleston, South Carolina, and William Benton of Atlanta, Georgia; four daughters, Denise Benton, Brenda Benton, Josie Benton, and Kolethea “Shawn” (Michael) Mason all of Savannah, Georgia; three siblings, Charlie Benton, IsaDell Benton and Janie Benton of Savannah, Georgia; twenty-one grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The viewing will be held from 12 until 8 o’clock Thursday, July 30, 2020, at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.
The funeral service will be held at 10 o’clock Friday morning, July 31, 2020, in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service, conducted by Pastor Charles Dumas. Interment will follow in Woodville Cemetery.
