BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - William Donald Bryant, 58, husband of Vikki Bowyer Bryant, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his home in Palmetto Bluff South Carolina.

Don was born February 8, 1953, in Beckley, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Lawrence Edward Bryant and the late Mary Staples Bryant.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Vikki Bowyer Bryant; one son and daughter-in-law, James Robert and Maryclaire Akers; three grandchildren, Katherine Bryant Akers, Ethan Bryant Akers and Harper Bryant Akers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and George Davis and Paulette and Eddie Wood; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Kandace Bryant, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Don was a graduate of Beckley College and West Virginia University where he received both undergraduate and advanced degrees. He received academic scholarships to Beckley College, an American Legion Scholarship and WVU scholarships including a Benedum Scholarship. Don completed a 2½ year graduate program in 12 months to receive his master’s degree in social work. He was initially employed as a social worker and grant writer to help the people of West Virginia. Don then owned and operated several successful businesses for 30 years in West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. He found a great deal of pride and pleasure as a small business owner during which time he helped many customers and associates whom he considered friends. Don loved history, especially the civil war era. He was an avid collector of Civil War memorabilia. He enjoyed spending time on the May River and was grateful for his time in Palmetto Bluff where he was blessed to meet many exceptional friends.

Don was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and pets.

A memorial service will be held at 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2011, at the chapel at Palmetto Bluff with the reception immediately thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, Don requested donations to The Hilton Head Humane Association – Post Office Box 21790, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina 29925 or PALS – Post Office Box 539, Bluffton, South Carolina 29910.

Dear Vikki,
I was just thinking about the two of you this week. Ours is a friendship that I knew would be one throughout the years no matter how big the gap between visits. Words can not express how shocked Iwas this morning to see this in the paper. Please know that you are in my prayers and let me know if I can do anything.

Love,

Dennis

I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. I was shocked when I read on hdonline that Don had passed away. I have not seen you all in years, but always thought so highly of you. Please know that you and Don meant a lot to me, you gave me a job and were very supportive and helpful with working with my schedule at Marshall as well. My heart breaks for the family and friends, which were many, Don left behind. He was my friend. I will never forget his kindness and his ability to help individuals see their own value and to reach goals that, without Don's presence, would have been impossible to reach. His friendship and examples will always be remembered and will remain a constant encouragement. Our prayers are with Vicky and the family in this time of loss. May God be with you.

Dear Vikki,
The news of Don's passing has left us shocked and speechless. We have thought of both of you often and had no idea you were going through such a difficult time. We are so sorry to hear about your recent struggle and now of your loss. As we think about Don and our memories of him, we recall most vividly his fiercely high standards and his uncompromising sense of principle--both of which were never more obvious than in the beautiful house the two of you built at Glade and later passed on to us. We treasure our memories of living there and of the good times we shared with you and Don.

I want to thank you all for your kind words. This has been a very difficult time for our us and we appreciate everyone who has taken the time to leave a note. I'm sorry I haven't had time to personally thank you but we are reading all the messages and they mean a great deal to us. Please keep my Mom and all of Don's family in your prayers. For those who don't know Don was diagnosed with cancer in October. He remained positive until the very end; I never heard Don complain or say one negative thing about his situation. He was just a great guy, there's not much more I can say. Thank you again,
JB

As tears stream down my face, I absolutely cannot think of words to express how I am feeling right now. We go way back Vikki...40 years+ and I remember the first time you met Don. From that day on you 2 were inseparable. You had had such a rough start in life and I always tried to be there for you, but when you met him I knew I didn't have to worry about you anymore. He was so sweet and kind and he loved you so much, I knew you would be OK. You have been on my mind so much for the last two weeks, now I know why. I have searched facebook and tried the phone numbers I have, but none worked and this was before I found out. I would love to talk to you, please call 304-395-2329. My heart is aching for you my friend. I love you dearly. Your old friend.

To Vikki and family,
I am so sad about Don's passing. I am thinking of all of you in this difficult time. Don was not just my boss, but he was my mentor. He used every opportunity he could to teach me and improve me into a better employee, a better manager, and a better person. I loved all of his stories about the Civil War and I loved all of his personal stories that had a life lesson at the end. He had a great impact on my life. In January of 2007, Don believed in me enough to move up from South Carolina to Roanoke to manage the store. I probably wasn't completely deserving of it, but he believed in me. I was so proud and wanted to make him proud too. In March of 2007, I met a man and married him and we now have 2 beautiful boys - Austin is 2 1/2 and Ethan is 7 months. If Don hadn't believed in me enough to give me that opportunity, I wouldn't have met my husband and have my beautiful children and I am eternally grateful to him for that. I will never forget his stories, lessons, warmth, generosity, love for animals, and what a wonderful person he was to work for. He was a respectable man who will never be forgotten. Vikki, I would love to be in touch so please call me at 803-528-0823 or email me at hjk1980@ymail.com if you ever need anything or just want to chat. I have missed you both very much over the past few years. I wish I could come for the service, but we are living in Washington State now and can't make it back.
Wishing all of Don's friends and family comfort, peace, and solace while we mourn the loss of our friend.

I'm so sorry to hear about Donnie. Donnie and I went to school from Stanaford Grade though Woodrow Wilson High School.I remember Donnie as a good friend. He was smart and very good at sports. He will be missed. I'm trying to get a reunion together for the old Stanaford Grade School on June 11, 2011. He was a big part of my life while in school. Remember God is GREAT and He knows the best even if we don't understand his will, we will one day. I wish his family the thought of his love. If you can come to the reunion you will see his passing is being felt by all who knew him.

Vikki, I wrote this poem for Don a week before he pass. Eagle were do you fly, summer, winter wind of skies. What of rain, clouds. Freedom is your in beauty. Wisdom hope, trust in moment. Moment of silents. STILL as air changing roads of direction, strength from with end. Vikki, I am always here for you in every way. We will go on with the beautiful memories of Don his spirit will live forever. Donnie told me to always move freely and let my thought blow in the wind. He said to me Iam calm. Iam happy, and Iam at peace. I love you Vikki just like I loved my brother Donnie.

Vikki, I am so sorry it took me so long to post something. Its hard to know what to say. Don was very important to us. I do wish we could have spend more time with you all. I can't express how important my memories of our vacation to Savannah are. Getting to spend some time with you and Don will always be special memories. Don was a major influence on Val's life growing up. He has talked to me about it several times. Don got Val into the career he is today, Don made Val into the good store manager and salesman he is!
Vikki, you and the rest of the family will stay in my thoughts and prayers.

We love you!
