Lawton shared the news with us on Thursday about Merrill's illness. Lawton had planned to visit with y'all on Sunday. Merrill will be missed by so many people. He had an exciting life. It is so comforting to know that he visited the nursing homes to bring comfort and solace to those in need. He will always be remembered for his good deeds. Jason has been a good son to Merrill and to his mother, Joan. I don't know of many sons who will lay down their job to be with their parents during the last days of their lives. Jason has jewels in his crown and the respect of many. God Bless all--Love, Jane and Allen

We are very sorry to hear of Merrill's early death. We have a lot of good and happy memories of Merrill and will always remember him as he was in those days. We are sad for his wife, children and grandchildren. Charlie was planning to go to the nursing home again today to visit with Merrill and was sad to get a call from our son Marshall telling him that Merrill pasted away yesterday. Merrill was an instrument in helping Charlie to learn to play the guitar many years ago. Charlie related to Merrill because there were a lot of "old" similar traits of their early years which they were able to share with one another and draw strength from one another.
We pray that Martha and the rest of the family will find peace in knowing that Merrill is now "at home' with the Lord.
May God Bless your family with peace snd consolation!
Love,
Anne and Charlie

Martha, So sorry to hear about Merrill in the Charleston paper. I am in Ridgeland, SC, and found out from a friend who read it to me from the paper. I am so sorry for your loss, and I know that it will take a while to get over it. I heard that he did a lot of good with his life, and I know that his mother would be very proud of him. I also know that you had a lot of fun together. If you come to Charleston, please call me, and we will get together.
Bless you,
Lillian

I was so sorry to hear about the death of my cousin Merril. We grew up together as kids, but as adults we each went our separate ways. I had not seen Merril in quite awhile and enjoyed seeing him at the birthday party for his brother Harold Shokes. I am so blessed knowing that Merril loved the Lord and that I will see him again one day in heaven. Martha I know you will miss him so much, but I know you had a wonderful relationship and have many special memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you all " cousin sandy"

What an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day to celebrate a BEAUTIFUL person! Merrill could not have asked for a more perfect day on which to celebrate his life. We all laughed, cried, and simply sat in disbelief as the reality set in: we will no longer see our husband, father, brother, uncle and friend here on this earth, but what a fantastic day it will be to see him again in Paradise. I miss my guitar-playing partner. I miss your laughter. I miss your nervous energy. And most of all, I MISS YOUR INCESSANT FUSSING!! :) Until we meet again, sweet uncle . . .

Thank you all for your kind words. We had a lovely memorial service for Dad at Jekyll Island yesterday where we spread his ashes on the beach. The beach has always been his favorite place to be. I am very grateful that I was able to spend so much time with him in his last month and I will miss him greatly. Dad's mantra was 'no stress' and now I am sure that he won't have any where he is now. I love you, Dad...

I was sorry to read of Merrill's passing. I remember him from those innocent days of grammar school at Riverland Terrace in the 50's. My condolences to the family.

Words often mean so much but say so little when it comes to expressing the loss of a loved one. Merrill and I are 1st cousins. Our relationship goes back to the 1950’s. I’m eight years older than Merrill and when he was seven, his mother (Julia B) would ask me to rake their front and back yard because Merrill was too young to rake. It seems when I would rake the leaves into a pile, Merrill would take a bucket full and dump into an area I had already raked. Merrill was like that. In Riverland Terrace, the louder you would call his name, the faster he could run. The last couple months, Before his illness, Merrill called me several times asking how the weather was in Kingstree? He wanted to visit but he kept saying the weather was too cold. Well our time will have to wait for now, but when I hear the Savior call my name, I’m sure it won’t be too long before I hear Merrill say “Hey Man” glad you made it.
