SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Maxine “Midge” Lasky Schildkraut, 71, of Savannah Georgia, wife of Herbert “Herbie” Schildkraut, died Sunday morning, January 22, 2012, at Memorial University Medical Center.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Maurice Lasky and the late Shirley Katner Lasky. After graduating from college she worked for the Savannah Evening Press as a reporter. She later moved to New York, where she met her husband Herbie, and was the editor for Good Housekeeping Magazine’s food section. Midge and Herbie returned to Savannah to be closer to her parents after living many years in New York. She worked as the public relations director at Candler Hospital until her retirement. Her picture could be seen around Savannah on the mobile screening buses that brought health services to many in the Savannah area.  Midge was a member of Congregation Agudath Achim and served as the first female Congregation President. She was very active in the leadership of Shalom School and served as a former editor for the Savannah Jewish News. Midge volunteered for twenty years as President of Morning Star Cultural Arts Group. Midge always cared and had concern for others.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert “Herbie” Schildkraut, of Savannah, Georgia and her daughter, Robyn Schildkraut of Atlanta, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Kenneth R. Leitner.

I had the honor, privilege and pleasure of working alongside Midge when I was VP of Public Relations at Candler Hospital in the early 1990s. Midge was one of those rare people who was authentic in every respect. There was no pretense, no gloss, no veneer, just a genuine lady who gave her best to her faith, her family, her congregation, her hospital and her community. She had her priorities in order. She will always be to me one of those memorable, wonderful figures that God allows you to know in your lifetime. Herbie and Robyn, may Midge's absence make your memories of and love for her even keener. I pray God's comfort and blessings on you, as well as your friends and fellow congregants, during this time of transition. What a dear lady indeed.

Midge was a smart, funny, real person, who loved her family, her community, her work, and her friends. She could always put a smile on my face and brought laughter to my WW groups. She will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to you both. Lean on God for the strength that you will need to adjust to life without her physical presence. Her love and her spiritual presence will be with you always .

I am saddened to hear of the loss of our friend Midge. I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Midge at Candler Hospital. Midge was a true professional, an editor, a “wordsmith.” I always looked forward to reading our company’s newspaper; Midge had such a talent telling a story or explaining a complex medical issue so we could all understand.

As Public Relations Director, Midge found that fine balance of keeping our community informed and also sharing news and programs that offered hope to those in need.

I also had a great admiration and respect for her commitment to the Jewish faith. I know her colleagues and I also drew strength from her dedication to community and God.

Herbie and Robyn, may the Lord bless you. Know that Midge was a beloved member of the Candler Community and I was truly blessed to have known her.
