arata_150_x_155

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Howard Paul Arata, 92, of Savannah, and formerly of Tybee Island, widower of Virginia Ruth Smith Arata, died Tuesday morning, November 23, 2010, at River’s Edge.

Howard was born April 13, 1918, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, Howard, Jr.

The Great Depression of ’29 required him to develop work habits at an early age, first selling his mother’s home baked goods and doughnuts door to door to help sustain the family. A diverse work experience followed until 1941, when employed by Family Finance Corp and a career of 36 years in management and supervision. Mr. Arata then spent 14 years in banking with Trust Company, now Sun Trust Bank, retiring in December, 1992.

Mr. Arata was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy (Nov. 1943 – Jan. 1946) at Naval Supply Depot, Guam. His memoirs reflect several letters of commendation for his performance and work ethic. Mr. Arata was able to attend Savannah’s World War II Memorial dedication on November 7, 2010.

Surviving are his children, Mickey (Eddie) Johnson, Elizabeth Faris, Melissa (Ben) Wells, Tony (Jaymi) Arata, and daughter-in-law, June Arata; grandchildren: Paul Young, Antonio Arata, Ryan Arata, Virginia Sims, Betsy Boykin, Will Sims, Thomas Faris, Sara Faris, James Faris, Ben Wells, Awbrey Smith, Nolan Wells, Katie Arata and Allison Arata; fifteen great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Griffis; and a dear friend and helpmate in his later years, Mrs. Roberta Andrews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning in St. James Catholic Church conducted by Father Mark J. Ross. Interment will be private.

Remembrances: St. James Catholic School – 8412 Whitfield Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31406-6198.

My thoughts and prayers Tony and Jaymi to you and your family. I enjoyed the many visits your Dad made to CVS sharing so many stories with me at the pharmacy counter. I still have the pictures he gave me years ago of him with Garth Brooks and Patti Loveless. He was truly a wonderful person. Alot of people have come and gone in my heart buy it still seems like yesterday we were sharing "country music" stories.....Thank you Mr Arata for sharing those stories with me. You will be missed.

Becky, Alex, and I would like to extend to Mr. Arata's family, extended family and friend,Mrs.Evans our most heartfelt sympathies in this time of loss and broken hearts. It will be hard to imagine a Savannah, Georgia without him in it...He has been here ever since I moved down and i took it for granted...I have told Tony many times and I will tell you all now; Howard and your mother welcomed me in their home, fed me, and treated as close to another family member as can be (with ALL that that entails)and I appreciated it,loved them for it and have never forgotten their warmth , kindness, and inclusion...Fortunately, a week or so ago, I was able to talk to him by phone and tell him I have some awfully good memories of him and tell the old sailor,in the nick-of-time it turns out, that I loved him...What a good man and what a quality life. I join you in celebrating Howard Paul Arata--a true example of a good American...I will miss him...My thoughts are with those who loved him.

My Dear Tony, Jamyi & Gals,
my heart is heavy with the weight of your loss... But what a lIfe the Big Man lived. In all the years we've been together and all the daily phone calls back and forth between you two I must have heard "I love you" more times than I can count. Better yet, you proved it by the miles logged between Nashville and the Tybe coastline you both loved so much. This was a life well lived and one heck of a lesson in how we should all learn from. I know I have!
I love you all,
lee roy

I am so sorry to hear of this news. I have known and loved Mr. Arata for most of my life, when he would be here in Albany working with my daddy, and in the later years when he would visit or he and Daddy would go off on their excursions. I will miss him greatly! My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Elaine

I doubt that anyone outside the family knew Howard betterthan I. Nor will anyone miss him more.
We worked together for many years, and after retirement, kept close contact by visits and through a seried of automobile trips that covered all of the lower 48 states.
When age eventually prevented all but occasional visits, we kept in touch by phone. Such close contact enabled me to learn a lot about the man.
He was different! Different in many good ways that made you enjoy his company and learn something in the process.
I will miss all this, for now there can be only memories.
Mickey, Beth, Melissa and Tony; I join you in your grief.
And Howard.... So long Old Buddy. Thank you for Sharing

My husband and I knew Mr. Arata from the late 50's. I worked for him a short time, and my husband trained under his supervision. We both loved and admired him so very much. He was the inspiration for my husband's long career in finance. With each promotion my husband received, he also received a note of congratulations from Mr. Arata. He treasured those notes so much, that upon this death in 2003, I packed them away with his business letters and awards. His passing is a great loss to all who knew and loved him. My sincere condolences to all his family. Good night, Mr. Smith.
