DR. LESTER GRETENSTEIN

 

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Dr. Lester Gretenstein, 89, of Savannah, Georgia, widower of Frances Solomon Gretenstein, died Tuesday afternoon, August 17, 2010, at his home.

Born in New York, New York, he was a son of the late Jacob Gretenstein and the late Lena Feldman Gretenstein. Dr. Gretenstein was a graduate of the College of Charleston and Atlanta Southern Dental College (now Emory University). He was a United States Army veteran having served in the Medical Corps in Europe during World War II. He spent his childhood in Charleston, South Carolina, where he met his wife, and after the war they lived their lives together in Savannah. Dr. Gretenstein was a member of Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob where he was a former member of the Board of Directors. He was a member and former president of the Jewish Educational Alliance.

Surviving are two sons, Steven Gretenstein and his wife, Barb Shrut, of Coral Gables, Florida, and Harvey Gretenstein and his wife, Judy, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and three grandchildren, Amy Gretenstein, Mark Gretenstein and Julie Gretenstein.

The funeral service will be held at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus.

I worked with Dr. G at Armstrong. He was our clinical dentist. What a wonderful, caring man. He was an example to us all with his patience, love of learning, and kindness to both the students and faculty. I'm sorry for your loss.

I was so sorry to hear of Doctor Gretenstein's passing! He was my dentist for many years and cared for my whole families dental needs. He always smiled and joked with us and that meant alot to scared kids! My prayers for God's comfort for your family. uxhaf
