SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Amy Coker Vestal, 58, of Savannah, Georgia, wife of Joe Vestal, died Monday evening, January 4, 2010, at Memorial Health University Medical Center.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late George Coker and the late Roseanne Hammock Coker. Amy was a member of the Kirk O’ the Isles Presbyterian Church (PCA). In Atlanta, she was a sales manager for Upjohn Pharmaceuticals and a commercial real estate broker.

In 1998, Joe and Amy moved to Savannah. Amy’s interests in politics lead her to become very active in the local Republican Party. Amy was a member and past vice president of the Savannah Area Republican Women’s Club. In 2000, she was named volunteer of the year for the Chatham County Republican Party. She served as the Chatham County delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2000 and attended the first inauguration of President George W. Bush. Amy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and worked as a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Joseph “Joe” C. Vestal of Savannah, Georgia; his mother Pansy Vestal of Jonesville, North Carolina and their 11 year old puppy, Molly Girl Vestal, of Savannah, Georgia. As an only child, her cousins and friends were Amy’s family, of which there are too many to name.

The family will receive friends from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock Thursday at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning in the Kirk O’ the Isles Presbyterian Church conducted by The Reverend Dr. Neil C. Stewart.  Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Remembrances:  Kirk O’ the Isles Presbyterian Church (PCA) – 6500 Habersham Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405-5946.

Dearest Joe, Molly, Pansy and family. Amy always had the most special part in my heart. Being friends with her was an honor. We walked dogs on Skidaway Island for years and became like sisters. I will try to live a life she'd be proud of. Her spirit will always be with me. Susan Daly

Joe,

We are so sorry to hear about Amy's home going. She was such a wonderful person. Our daughter April loved Amy so much. She was a blessing to so many folks. She put up an incredible fight until the very end and never complained about her condition. Our Savannah South Camp of the Gideons International kept Amy on our prayer list for several years. She is finally healed and home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Joe,
I am ever grateful that we arrived in Savannah the same time as you and Amy. And, my true joy is that the cute little red headed girl at the New Neighbors coffee became my dear friend. Being Amy's friend was a treasure beyond words.
May the memories of your beautiful wife comfort you as you deal with her absence. Know that many of your friends are suffering along with you. Please tap into this resource as you move forward.
We can all thank God we have a new saint to assist us in our journey through life.
Lots of love and hugs,
Joan & Bob Hug

My sincerest condolences to you. Amy and I became friends after she joined our walking group for cancer survivors. She has not been able to walk with us for a while, but she and I stayed in touch by email and often had lunch together. Whenver Sam and I would travel overseas on a hiking vacation, I would bring her back a rock along with a story about where it was found. She has a rock from Vezelay, a gathering point for the early Christian pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostelo in Spain. From our last trip I picked up a rock in Lyon outside of the ruins of one of the earliest churches built outside of Rome.

She will be missed by all who knew her.

Joe,
Amy is an imspiration to all who know her well. She faced adversity with dignity and courage--never complaining. She thought of others and gave unselfishly. She worked to support worthwhile causes whereever she found them. Her example for living is still with us and will not be forgotten. We pray for you during these difficult times and look forward to seeing you soon.
